Baby! It's Cold Outside!

Real People. Real Windows. Real Problems. Real Solutions.

Recently, I got this call from a customer:

“This isn't really a window problem," she said. "It's more a door problem. Well, a door with a window problem. I can't really explain it. I need help. Will you come out?"

And, this is how I found out about the beautiful 250 year old antique door that really didn't keep the cold out.

What to do?

I was reminded of a trip I took several years ago when I had the pleasure of visiting friends south of London. They have a 300 year old Queen Anne house. Needless to say, lots has happened to this house over the centuries. Miraculously, it still had the original front door but, boy, did it leak heat. Their solution was to install heavy lined drapery and stack it off the door on the wall when they didn’t need the thermal protection.

A good solution for them, but not the right choice for my customer. She didn’t want drapery and I wanted to showcase as much of the beautiful antique Danish door as possible.

This is what we decided:

We used Duette Honeycomb Architella Trielle Elan Eclipse 1 1/2” Opaque. This is a new offering from Hunter Douglas. I like the over-scale size of the new 1 ½” profile.  We used the UltraGlide lift system. We wanted the door to be fully visible so we decided on an outside mount. And, since the door was large we needed a pair of blinds to cover the entire door/wall. And, the colour?
We were the luckiest ducks in the world. 999 – Bisque perfectly matched the Naples Cream paint.

I was worried that the outside mount installation would be unsightly but it wasn’t. My customer said she has to point out the shade to friends when it is fully stacked above the door. And, the energy efficiency? Literally off the charts! 6 stars (in a five star chart!). This shade is a real workhorse. 6 stars for solar heat control; 5 stars for ultraviolet protection and 3 ½ stars for sound absorption.

A beautiful solution for a beautiful door and ~ lower energy bills.

Do you have a window you need help with? Give me a call. Of course, the Puget Sound area in-home consultation is complimentary.
Let’s see what I can do for you.

Every day grateful ~ back to my blog in the New Year!
